This is a large wetland area located in the Ohio River and Wabash River floodplains.

Specialty Species:

Yellow-crowned Night-Heron:  Yellow-crowned Night-Herons can be found nesting on the property.  They are most easily observed at dawn and dusk.

Waterfowl:  This area can be a great place to look for waterfowl during migration.

Where to Bird:

Headquarters:  Check the area around the headquarters for Western kingbird during the summer.  You can also scan the lake from this area for waterfowl.

Bird Observation Tower:  This tower that overlooks the lake is located about 1 mile south of the headquarters.  This is a great place to scan the lake for waterfowl.

Rail Marsh Levee:  This area is located about 0.15 miles south of the Observation Tower.  Most people hike out to the flood gate and back but it is possible to walk completely around the marsh.  Check the area for waterfowl and Yellow-crowned Night-Herons among the more common marsh birds.

Directions:

From the North:  From the intersection of I-64 and SR-69 near Griffin, IN, take SR-69 South.  After about 20 miles, turn right (west) to stay on SR-69 in Mount Vernon.  Go 2.7 miles and turn left (south) to stay on SR-69.  After 8.3 miles, turn left (south) into the Hovey Lake Headquarter and Boat Ramp.
