This former mining property is now leased to the state for uses as a FWA.  The property consists of deep lakes and grasslands.

Specialty Species:

Rough-legged Hawk:  This species uses this area during the winter.

Northern Harrier:  Northern Harriers also make use of this area during the winter.

Short-eared Owl:  This owl is most easily found in the evening during the winter when they emerge from roosting to hunt for rodents in the grasslands.

Northern Shrike:  Northern Shrikes can be found by driving through the property during the winter and looking for them perched on the tips of trees while hunting.

Henslow’s Sparrow:  This is a great place to find Henslow’s Sparrows during the nesting season.

Bell’s Vireo:  Bell’s Vireos nest throughout the grasslands on this property.

Merlin:  Merlins are most easily found by driving down Center Road (just outside the property) in the evenings during the winter months.

Where to Bird:

Center Road:  This is the best spot in the area to find Merlins during the winter.

County Roads:  The easiest way to bird this site is to slowly drive along the county roads that go through the property.  All of the birds listed above can be found by birding this way.  It is not a very large area so drive as many of the roads as you have time for.

From the North:  From the intersection of I-70 and SR-41 in Terre Haute, take SR-41 South.  After 26.65 miles, turn left (east) onto SR-54.  Turn left (north) and then right (east) to stay on SR-54.  The property begins after 1.55 miles.

From the South:  From the intersection of US-50 and US-41 in Vincennes, take SR-41 North.  Go 27.6 miles and turn right (east) onto SR-54.  Turn left (north) and then right (east) to stay on SR-54.  The property begins after 1.55 miles.

From the East:  From the intersection of SR-59 and SR-54, take SR-54 East.  After 2.80 miles, stay left to stay on SR-54.  The property begins after 5.65 miles.
