This old strip mine offers the opportunity to observe many grassland species.

Specialty Species:

Sparrows:  Sparrows can be found throughout the property during the spring, summer, and fall.

Hawks:  Many hawks winter in this area including Rough-legged Hawks, Northern Harriers, and Merlins.

Short-eared Owl:  Short-eared Owls also winter in this area.  It is one of the best places to observe these owls in Indiana.

Northern Shrike:  Northern Shrikes can be found in scrub habitat throughout the property.

Waterfowl:  Check all of the lakes throughout the property for waterfowl during the late fall, winter, and early spring.

Where to Bird:

County Roads:  Begin by checking the first 2 ponds you come to on Swalls Drive.  Turn left (north) onto CR 550 W.  Then turn left (west) onto CR 600 N.  At the T intersection, turn left (south) onto Tabertown Street.  You will then run back into Swalls Drive.

Directions:

From the North:  Take US-41 South towards Terre Haute.  In downtown Terre Haute, turn left onto Wabash Avenue/US-40.  Go 4.4 miles and turn right onto SR-46.  After 1.1 miles, turn left onto SR-42.  After 2.3 miles, do not veer right to stay on SR-42 but instead go straight onto Swalls Drive.  After about 1.75 miles, you will see two ponds one on each side of the road.  You have now reached Chinook Mines.

From the South:  Take US-41 North towards Terre Haute.  Take the ramp to I-70 East.  Take the next exit (Exit 11) for SR-46.  Turn right onto SR-46.  Go 2.3 miles and turn right onto SR-42.  After 2.3 miles, do not veer right to stay on SR-42 but instead go straight onto Swalls Drive.  After about 1.75 miles, you will see two ponds one on each side of the road.  You have now reached Chinook Mines.

From the East:  Take I-70 West from Indianapolis.  Take Exit 11 for SR-46.  Turn right onto SR-46.  Go 2.1 miles and turn right onto SR-42.  After 2.3 miles, do not veer right to stay on SR-42 but instead go straight onto Swalls Drive.  After about 1.75 miles, you will see two ponds one on each side of the road.  You have now reached Chinook Mines.

From the West:  Take I-70 East from Terra Haute.  Take Exit 11 for SR-46.  Turn right onto SR-46.  Go 2.3 miles and turn right onto SR-42.  After 2.3 miles, do not veer right to stay on SR-42 but instead go straight onto Swalls Drive.  After about 1.75 miles, you will see two ponds one on each side of the road.  You have now reached Chinook Mines.
