Pine Hills Nature Preserve

This mature riparian woodland preserve protects many acres of land used by many breeding passerines.
Specialty Species:
Vireos: All the regularly occurring Indiana woodland vireos can be found during the spring and fall. During the summer look for Yellow-throated and Red-eyed Vireos.
Thrushes: All the regularly occurring thrushes can be found along the trail in the spring and fall.
Warblers: Look for flocks of warblers using this area in the spring and fall. During the breeding season look for Hooded, Kentucky, and Worm-eating Warblers which all breed on the property. Check for Hooded and Worm-eating Warblers in hilly areas, as that is where they breed.

Park Trails: After parking in the lot on the west side of SR-234, walk back across the road to the beginning of the trail. Walk this trail which will eventually lead down into the canyon. Walk along the creek during the spring and fall to find flocks of migrant passerines.

From the North: Take SR-231/SR-43/SR-32 South out of Crawfordsville. Turn right (west) onto SR-47, after turning onto SR-47 stay in the left lane to stay on SR-47. After 8.1 miles, turn right (west) onto SR-234. Go 5.75 miles and turn left (west) into the Pine Hills Nature Preserve Parking Lot.
From the South: Take SR-47 North from Waveland. After 5 miles, turn left (west) onto SR-234 (look for the Shades State Park Sign). Go 5.75 miles and turn left (west) into the Pine Hills Nature Preserve Parking Lot.
