This reclaimed strip mine contains great grassland and lake/marsh habitat that create a great birding spot year round.

Specialty Species:

Waterfowl:  Check all of the ponds that you see on the property for waterfowl.

Trumpeter Swan:  This species can be found on any lake or pond on the property, so always be on the lookout for it.

Northern Harrier:  During the fall and winter, it is likely that you will see Northern Harriers gliding over the fields.

Rough-legged Hawk:  During the winter, this is a common species to see throughout the property.

Short-eared Owl:  Many Short-eared Owls use this property as their wintering grounds.

Blue Grosbeak:  Listen and watch for this species during the summer along all the roadways through the grasslands.

Sparrows:  Sparrows are present in the marshes and fields throughout the year.  Henslow’s Sparrow is fairly easy to find in the spring and early summer.

Where to Bird:

County Roads:  The two main roads through the property are 1800S and 200W.  Start on these roads to see most of everything that the mines have to offer.  Drive other roads as time permits.  The other roads offer the same habitats so you will find many of the same species on them.
