Palmetto-Peartree Preserve was purchased in 1999 by the Conservation Fund with funds that were provided by the North Carolina Department of Transportation.  It covers 10,000 acres and is an important location for Red-cockaded Woodpeckers.  In addition to the woodpeckers, Bald Eagles, Peregrine Falcons, Red Wolves, Bobcats, and Black Bears also call the preserve home.

Directions:

From the East:  From the only stoplight in Columbia, go east on US-64.  After 5.3 miles, turn left (north) onto SR-1229/Old US-64 (there is a Palmetto-Peartree Preserve sign near this intersection and from this area, you can follow the signs to the preserve).  Go just over 2 miles and turn left (north) onto SR1221/Newfoundland Road.  This road will come to a T at SR-1209/Soundside Road.  The majority of the preserve lies north of this road.  From this intersection, follow the directions listed in the Where to Bird Section.

From the West:  After coming off the over the Alligator River Bridge, go 4.8 miles and turn right (North) onto SR-1229/Old US-64 (there is a Palmetto-Peartree Preserve sign near this intersection and from this area, you can follow the signs to the preserve).  After 3.3 miles, turn right (north) onto SR1221/Newfoundland Road.  This road will come to a T at SR-1209/Soundside Road.  The majority of the preserve lies north of this road.  From this intersection, follow the directions listed in the Where to Bird Section.
